Signatunes - music signatures with FoxyTunes
Today we’re releasing the first phase of what will soon become FoxyTunes 3.0. In this first release we’re introducing a cool new feature called “Signatunes“.
Signatunes allows signing your email messages and blog posts with your currently playing music. Why would you want to do that? Letting your friends know what you were listening to while writing the message is a great way to tell them about your mood, or introduce them to one of your favorite songs. The added music signature is more just a song title – it links to FoxyTunes Planet where your friends can listen to music and learn all there is to know about your favorite artists and songs.
So, how does Signatunes work? FoxyTunes adds a special icon to web mail sites, Blogging services and social networks, such as Facebook, MySpace, Gmail, Yahoo mail, Wordpress and many others. This allows you to add a music signature to your message with a click. There is also an ‘auto-insert’ mode, which allows you to automatically add a Signatune to every message you compose. If you already have a preset signature – don’t worry, Signatune doesn’t replace your existing signature – it’s added to the end of the message following the message body and any existing signatures.
Initially, the following services are supported:
In the future, we are planning to add Signatunes to many more sites, Blogging and webmail services, forums and so on.
Signatunes is available in the latest version of FoxyTunes for Firefox – check it out and let us know what you think!

Alex, it looks great! There’s a question, though - will it be extensible in a way that a localizer (e.g. me) can add another webmail service? I’d really appreciat it since none of those listed services are more popular here than the quite dominant one.

For some reason, FoxyTunes doesn’t pick up what songs I’m playing on my iTunes now even though I have them linked up. Any idea what’s up with that?
July 28th, 2007 at 12:23 am
@Paulo - this version is not only for gran paradiso - it will happily work in Firefox 2
@pierro - stay tuned for a Thunderbird version of this
@Hazel - make sure you get the latest version from here: http://www.foxytunes.com/firefox/download/
@Lynnsie - sure, we’ll see what we can do, we’re planning to continuously add more and more sites!
@Gaby - looks like an iTunes problem - did you recently upgraded your iTunes? If so, please try to reinstall your iTunes - in most cases that solves the problem. If you see any additional issues, please drop us a line here http://www.foxytunes.com/feedback.html and we’ll try to help

FoxyTunes causes Firefox to crash on 2.0.0.6 for some random reason. I have it disabled for now, but I figured out foxytunes was behind it.
July 31st, 2007 at 7:36 pm
I have a similar problem as SpikeyNDS, when I update firefox to 2.0.0.6, it becomes unstable and locks up as well. I am able to use firefox if I disable foxytunes, so I am sure he is correct what is behind it.

@SpikeyNDS, @Another… - please drop us a few lines with some more info at http://www.foxytunes.com/feedback.html - your media player, operating system and bit more info about the problem - when does it happen etc - and we’ll investigate asap. thanks!

If you can make that I can add a signature at any site, not just at the given sites, I’ll be very happy (and many other people I think) =)
Keep up the good work

It would be cool if you add an “Send Signature to clipboard” feature, so we can use the signature everywhere (for example in oultook or thinderbird). Thank you and cograts.

Hi there I came across this posting after googling for myspace music. Thanks for the interesting read. I have often thought about Signatunes - music signatures with FoxyTunes too. Thanks for sharing. On Monday I will have time to look into it more.

Signatunes does not work with the “new” version of Gmail. I just wanted to put that out there. To get it to work you need to go to the “Older” version of Gmail. Signatunes was a great idea with all the platforms it works in.

[…] Say you’re writing an email, and would like to sign it with the song that was playing 10 minutes ago. Until now, you had to go back and play that song again in order to be able to sign with it. But what if you heard this song on an Internet radio and there’s no way to go back? The new FoxyTunes version allows you to choose any song from your recent playback history and post it as a Signatune. […]

Is there a way to set the foxytunes signature so that it shows the format “Artist Name - Album - Song Name”?
