FoxyTunes joins Yahoo!

We are very excited to announce that FoxyTunes has been acquired by Yahoo!

So, what does this mean for you, our loyal user? Basically, it means that if you liked what we’ve done with FoxyTunes in the past, you’ll love what we’ll now be able to achieve being a part of Yahoo!. Read on for more details, and I hope you’ll be as excited as we are! :)
Why did Yahoo! acquire FoxyTunes?
We’ve been talking to the Yahoo! Music team about deepening our cooperation, and we quickly discovered that not only do they understand and appreciate what we’ve done with FoxyTunes, but they also share our vision of Universality and Openness, and are really prepared to take this vision forward and implement it on the largest scale possible! So, it was clear for everyone that an acquisition made sense, because it would allow us to really join forces and work together on our common vision.

What’s going to happen to FoxyTunes?

The FoxyTunes team will become a part of Yahoo! Music and will continue working on FoxyTunes, adding many great things to our products - you’ll see support for additional media players, integration with many additional music sites and services and much more! Our product roadmap and wishlist are quite long and very exciting, and being a part of Yahoo! will really allow us to make many of the things we’ve been planning a reality. Most importantly, Yahoo! are as committed as we are to preserving the Open spirit of FoxyTunes and embracing all the great music products and services out there.

Will this affect user privacy?
As always, your privacy is very important to us and we’ll never do anything to jeopardize it. You can see our privacy policy here.

What does this mean for FoxyTunes users and partners?
If you’re a FoxyTunes user you’ll still get the same unobtrusive but at the same time rich and universal experience you’ve come to expect from FoxyTunes. If you’re our partner, either existing or potential, rest assured that our philosophy of being open hasn’t changed - if you have a media player, music site or service, or in general if your stuff is of interest to music lovers - we’d be happy to work together! We’re planning to release more info on all the various ways of integrating and working with FoxyTunes in the near future.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped and supported us over the years - our passionate users, great partners, investors and friends - we really couldn’t make it without you. A special thanks goes to Yossi Vardi for his amazing support and for believing in us from the very beginning.

Also, check out Yahoo!’s announcement on Yahoo! Music Blog.

We are very excited to be joining the Yahoo! family and can’t wait to show you all the cool things we’re working on.

Stay Tuned! :)

so, what about http://lyricwiki.org/ ? much of my favorite songs are not on the yahoo lyrics widget, but they’re on lyrics wiki.

could you at least let us choose between the two? of course, the yahoo widget would be the default one, but i would like the possibility to choose.

    thank you!
    Adi B.

Love it! Congrats, but I’ll have to second Adi.B’s comment about lyricwiki. I haven’t had any matches on any of the lyrics I’ve looked for today (which is a lot). Either Yahoo! Music needs to beef up their lyrics database, or you need to re-add lyricwiki as an option.

    Thanks!

  11. Nox Says:

    I agree with Adi B.
The possibility to get lyrics with one click was the best thing about foxytunes. Now yahoo music hasn’t most of the lyrics. Bring back lyricwiki!

  12. Jonbo Says:

I agree with Nox (and Adi B). Please bring back lyricwiki!

  13. Jonas D'Achille Says:

Totally! I’m happy that you’re able to join up with Yahoo! but Yahoo! Music’s lyric database is WEAK in comparison to LyricWiki! I can’t believe how few songs are lyricized on Yahoo! Music.

As noted above, please give the option to use LyricWiki… or get Yahoo! Music to open up the ability to post lyrics, as Wiki does. I desperately NEED my lyrics! Pleeeeeease!

  34. Jason Says:

This is interesting news. Good news for you guys, most definitely. That’s wonderful that a Firefox add-on has gained support from a large corporation. This news is a tribute to the power of Firefox. The drawback I find is Microsoft’s seemingly inevitable acquisition of Yahoo. Hopefully Microsoft won’t touch Yahoo Music or come anywhere near the functionality of this add-on, but I’d really hate to see Yahoo Music or anything related to it get ‘microsofted.’

Secondly, I’d like to reiterate the suggestion of Adi.B. Lyricwiki.org will inevitably be ahead of Yahoo Music simply because its open and user-supported. Lyricwiki.org definitely reigns over Yahoo Music in the non-mainstream music category.

Good luck to you all. This project has made leaps and bounds since its inception and I can’t wait to see what you guys do next.

  35. Ryan Says:

What about the lyrics??? I love foxytunes, especially for infor and lyrics on lots of small indie type bands. Yah, you have sold out your base just like everyone else who develops something that becomes popular and we end up with an inferior soulless product. Get the lyrics working!!!! At least include a web search link!!!!!

  36. Kealan Says:

I love foxytunes, but I have a Zune, so I use the Zune media player mostly. Will support for this ever be added?

  37. Simon Says:

C’mon, bring back the lyricwiki.org widget - it was your best asset! Yahoo Lyrics is nothing by comparison. I use foxytunes to quickly get to lyrics, and if they’re consistently not there, I not going to bother adding them, I’ll just go straight to where I know them to be. Its such a shame coz foxytune *was* brilliant.

  39. Thiago Says:

Lyricwiki was the main feature of Foxytunes that I used. I don’t bother using Yahoo Lyric, if I could easily switch do LyricWiki when the song isn’t found.
The power of LyricWiki is just the possibility to add *every* music that I have on my library …
I’m sure Yahoo Lyric would’nt have the lyrics from brazilian indie rock bands that I listen to.

I wish good luck in your business, but PLEASE, bring back Lyricwiki!!!

  40. moe6 Says:

I was wondering why foxytunes couldn’t get any lyrics anymore. Yahoo lyrics obviously doesn’t even come anywhere remotely close to lyricwiki.

That’s 1/3 of the features I used foxytunes for gone :(.

  41. matmat07 Says:

I agree with everyone, lyricwiki is a must for foxytunes.

  42. K Says:

I just want to say it would be just as great if you could copy the lyrics

  43. Todd Says:

From looking at http://lyricwiki.org/LyricWiki:General_disclaimer, LyricWiki looks on all accounts to be illegal. If people want illegal lyrics so much, why don’t they start their own sites, like the LyricWiki folks did?

I’ll be on this soapbox for two more seconds. If you, dear reader, wrote a song which — after years of toil — you got a contract with a music publisher to protect, you wouldn’t be so hasty to just give it away to any chimp with a web browser. Ah, but that thinking is too abstract and advanced for some. My apologies.

Yahoo! Lyrics are legal. Period. Good enough.

  44. Frank Says:

  46. bobo Says:

the decision to move to Yahoo! music has degraded the foxytunes experience, in my opinion to the point that the application doesn’t even adequately fulfill an important function anymore. i never once had a problem finding the lyrics for a song when it was through lyricwiki, and it was the most important function that foxytunes fulfilled for me. however, now that the lyrics are based on Yahoo, i have never once been able to find the lyrics of a song i want through foxytunes. ever. and there is no option to find the lyrics through lyricwiki, either. it’s either yahoo’s terrible selection or nothing. although it’s reasonable to get a paycheck for all of the work you’ve done to create a great application, it should not come at the expense of the most important services that the application used to provide.

  47. ep0nym0us Says:

    Please, bring lyricwiki back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. Sam Says:

I agree with everyone about bringing back LyricWiki, but I understand that Yahoo! Music would much rather have you be using Yahoo! Database. So maybe if you could cut a deal with them and add it as an option for the Lyric widget. That would be great, but I hope we can all understand if you can’t. Also, either mine or Yahoo!’s encryption is messed up and all apostrophe ” ‘ ” characters chow up as gibberish. That said, we can’t add lyrics to Yahoo! Music. I would be a contributor when a song I love doesn’t show up. Unfortunately, I don’t listen to “current” artists like, um, “Flo Rider” and don’t get lyrics from the songs that I do listen to, like Carbon Leaf, which has maybe 1.5 album’s worth of lyrics, although I think they have 5 or 6 now. Now I am ranting and will be quiet soon, but unless my now-ridiculous demands are met, I will eat a puppy. Did I say eat a puppy? I meant go straight to LyricWiki. No puppy eating there.

  49. Stephen Says:

Definately agree with the everyone’s comments about lyricwiki… that was the best widget imo… yahoo lyrics is nowhere near as comprehensive. Maybe it could be set so that it would search lyricwiki only if there wasn’t a result for the track in yahoo lyrics?

I don’t use foxytunes planet anywhere near as much as I used to :(

  50. paul Says:

The loss of LyricWiki is a retrograde step. Please bring it back at least as an option. Like everyone else, I don’t get any return from Yahoo Lyrics. It’s an embarrassment.

  57. John A. Ellis Says:

Definitely all for capitalism like many others have noted here. But I too, am EXTREMELY disappointed that you dissolved your provision of access to lyricwiki COMPLETELY. I agree strongly with those who suggested that FoxyTunes instead use Yahoo’s (poor!) lyrics service first, with Lyricwiki filling -albeit there are a lot of them to fill; at least for now - in the cracks. I am definitely part of the party that is subsequently using foxytunes about 30% less because there are now no lyrics (I have yet to successfully find ANY lyrics at all with Yahoo’s service….. Of course… this can be fixed… now that Microsoft has gone soft on Yahoo, maybe you can negotiate a bit! BRING BACK LYRICWIKI!!!

  58. John Says:

  65. YahooUser Says:

i agree that yahoo tried to get their hands in too many things, but i also think that they do a lot of them better than google n microsoft, like email, gmail is ok, but yahoo UI is flawless, as for search i use both yahoo n google and they usually come back with same results, so music bussiness wise yahoo is the greatest of the big three, and if microsoft didnt have the msn messenger itd be already extinct in the internet market…
